My Weight Loss Attempt |

Starting over.... so many Yo-Yo diets over years, and
each one ended up with the same results.... gaining back more weight
than I had before I started. OK... enough whining... here I go.... Goals - Going to follow Dr. Phils books and TV advice, and change my lifestyle. Going to make these changes in stages, so I don't freak out and quit. Stage One - No more eating in front of the TV in my lounge chair. I will exercise every day, and make every effort to just plain be more active... getting healthy is more important than that rerun of West Wing. I am also going to use the "Supermarket Diet" on the advice of Chris Moore of West Palm Beach, FL. Chris responded to my post on my Home Wood Working Forum WoodWorking.Com, and I truly appreciate all the help my friends there have given me. This diet makes complete sense to me and fits in with my current lifestyle the easiest... which gives me the greatest chance of success. I have enrolled in Gold's Gym, and still have a membership at the Wellness Center Gym, and have purchased stretch bands and a medicine ball for working out at home. Current Medical condition - BP 176/105, taking BP medicine, Gout medicine, pain medicine for knees and back pain, and a new medicine that was intended for people with seizures but is supposed to help people who compulsively overeat, drink, smoke, etc. I can do 8 minutes on the treadmill at 2.4MPH. |

So far so good. "Supermarket Diet" is pretty easy to use, easy to shop for, and VERY easy to plan... because there is no planning. I can be late for work and still follow this plan, no problem. It will take awhile to find my favorites but that's fine. I am also using soups and sandwiches as long as it does not exceed 350-400 calories. All snacks are fruit (so far just grapes) ... I have a veggie tray, just haven't used it yet. Scott at Gold's Gym helped me stretch out the muscle spasm in my lower right back and I was able to do 15 minutes plus the 3 minute cool down on the treadmill at 2.8MPH! |

Managed to avoid the wonderfully supportive family last night as they not only barraged me with pizza but insisted I order it and and also managed to make sure I was the only one available when the pizza dude showed up. I paid the guy, put the pizza on the table, and went back and watched the TV until they finished eating, then went in and made my chicken and rice soup. I mention this so I can be reminded that there is no reason to use this as an excuse any more, or ever again!.... and it paid off when I went to work out this morning and also when I went to weigh in at the doctors office. Scott stretched that back muscle again for me, and I did 22 minutes on the treadmill and an aerobic session with the stretchy bands and medicine ball!! I have had 2 poached eggs and 2 frozen waffles at 6:30 this morning, and I was really hungry when I woke up! I mention this because I have never been hungry in the morning.. all I have ever had for the first few hours is my coffee... so this is also a major change. It's 11:15am now and I am starting to get a little hungry again. This sure sounds "normal" to me! This is what I am trying to achieve... normal eating habits.... |
| Notes to remember... |
01-14-2005 |
Getting to know what Lean Cuisines and other foods are best for me... The Chunky Beef soup is only 320 cal for the whole can and I was really full. I discovered that crackers were a bad thing, since I used to eat an entire sleeve with my soup... 480 calories in one sleeve... sheesh... The Salisbury steak is good as is the stuff bell pepper and the fried rice with chicken. I had something called Spanish rice and cheese that was like bum barf and was 370 calories and was about 3 bites... was pretty hungry 20 minutes later.... it's a learning process. Yesterday did 30 minutes on the treadmill!... and had that baby up to 3.2 for 2 minutes! I weighed in at another place and that scale said I had gained weight... that scale landed several yards away and the guy said it's not accurate above 300 pounds... oh, OK... sorry about your scale pal... I don't want to worry about weighing this time anyway. I am wearing pants that I could not wear at Christmas, and a belt that is on it's last notch and is still loose. Those are the measurements that mean something to me. I have learned that the "hunger" feeling... that kind of empty feeling in my stomach doesn't get worse when ignored, and if ignored long enough goes away... and I don't die :) I am getting used to that feeling, and just starting to recognize the difference between that feeling and actual hunger. I never knew they were so similar, which explains why I used to eat so much because I thought I was hungry. I really have to wait and pay attention to know when I am actually hungry. OK... bye for now... |

Weighed in today... am dropping weight like crazy... I may have to look into slowing this down a little, although I am sure it will slow itself down in time. It sure was nice to see that lower number though! I was thinking who am I kidding with this "I don't want to worry about weighing this time anyway" crap... it feels great to see the scale confirm what you feel! |

Have Bronchitis... lots of fun... so no workout or work last 2 days... I may add to this entry later... right now I feel crappy, so I just wanted to record the weight loss. I miss the workout when I don't go. |

5-27-2005 |
After over 2 months of jumping through all kinds of hoops and insurance stuff and a zillion medical tests I am finally scheduled for the surgery on June 8th in Atlanta. I had to lose weight before the surgery and I have done that... I am down to 372 as of today, and still have a few more days to lose a little more if I can... Atkins is the program I used, and lost from 409 down to 372 in 27 days... so 37 pounds in 27 days... pretty amazing. |
| Liquid Only Day! |
6-07-2005 |
Last day before surgery tomorrow... pretty nervous... but also looking forward to getting on the other side and start losing weight and changing my entire lifestyle... from one based on food, to one based on living and enjoying life. |
| 6-11-2005 | Surgery Done on 06-08-2005 ! Let's see..... I got to the hospital at 7:30am... was supposed to be there at 8:30am, but wasn't taking any chances.... I was immediately taken to a private room where I got nekkid and put on the backwards hospital gown... and waited.... ... and waited... and waited.... and waited.... the girl who was ahead of me in surgery had to change from lap to open so she took a lot longer... 12:15 I was wheeled, bed and all, back to the pre-surgery place... where I was given a cute little blue hat and given something to make me mellow... and I was definitely mellow... I never saw my surgeon before the surgery, just the anesthesiologist ... they must have given me the knock out stuff as I was off in lala land because I don't remember a thing... I woke up in recovery... it was a 2 hour surgery, due to my long torso made it hard for him to get the connections done... he had to hand sew VS staple most of the connections also... so all in all it was about 30 minutes longer than normal... I was in a bit of distress when I came to in recovery because I had a lot of fluid in my lungs and was having some trouble catching my breath. They got me cleared out pretty quick with some sort of drug and I went to my room. In the room they hooked me up to oxygen, the IV, a blood O2 monitor, and the things that squeeze your legs.... this was about 6:30 or so... at about midnight they woke me up for my first walk... if you were to list all the things in the world that I didn't feel like doing walking would have been at the top of the list... I made a lap around the place, and then did the breathing thing (hope all these technical words aren't throwing ya off) and was surprised at how much better I felt after the walk... from that point on I was bugging them to come unhook me so I could walk! Next day was more walking and breathing and a leak check... nasty clear crap you have to drink... but was so happy to have something to drink it was amazing... They have these swabs that look like giant Q-Tips but are soaked in something... and they can be used to swab your mouth to moisten it... I also used a wash cloth dampened to scrub the iguana crap off my tongue... you would think they would have better security in there... I mean, how did the iguana get in there anyhoo??? They gave me something to help me sleep last night... but still woke me up every four hours for walking, vital signs, and breathing... and some liquids... today I had Jell-O and crystal lite and coffee.. Had my catheter removed and the drain taken out... didn't like either of these experiences at all, but was sure happy to have them gone! I bribed one of the nurses with sex so she would let me go home early... and Tami got there at about 1:30 or so and we drove home through the storm of the century.... Thank you Tami!!! Susan B also visited which was very nice... .... and, here I am. My stomach is going crazy with all the gurgling and growling, and I have had to visit the little sailors room a few times... according to the nurse this is normal and most likely due to the nasty crap you drink for the leak test.... That's as detailed as I can get right now... still a little groggy... |

June 16th, 2005. I had my 1 week follow up today... love that 6 hour drive to Atlanta and back... sheesh.... I have lost another 17 pounds since my pre-op appointment on the 6th of June, and my weight is now 365. I really feel like getting below 300 is going to be a reality... one that I didn't think I would ever see! I can move to Stage III food Monday... so that will be cool... I still have not had anything even resembling food, so mashed potatoes sure sounds great! Here's my belly... with all the bruising... and minus the hair. I asked the surgeon if he was bouncing things off of me or what... and it turns out all that bruising is from the shots they give you to thin the blood. |

June 22nd, 2005 - Kinda scary how quickly the weight is coming off... I went in to the doctors today for gout in my left big toe, and weighed in at 352.... down 13 more pounds in just 6 days.... and I have not been able to walk in those 6 days due to the gout... I am now trying to open up the capsules to my gout medicine and take the stuff... sure hope it works...
|
07-10-2005 |
July 10th 2005. I finally got tired of all the fluctuations in the
different scales at the 3 different doctors, so I forked out the bucks
for a nice scale from Sears... and it says I am 346 now... only lost 6
pounds in 18 days... but like I said.. those scales were loony tunes...
I had a weird thing happen with my primary doc... he turned into a jerk after all these years.. for some reason he thought I was just trying to get extra time off work... why that would be a concern of his I have no clue... but after he glanced down at my foot and instantly declared "that doesn't look like gout" I knew I had to ditch this dude... so I called at least a dozen doctors and, based on how friendly the staff was on the phone, I chose a doctor. He was quick, thorough, and actually examined my foot!...what a concept! He declared "you have severe gout"... I was thinking "I know!!" but he then said he would have this cleared up and have me on a maintenance program in no time at all... it has been 4 days now, and I can walk again without limping and I can even move my big toe again! The high protein of the WLS prescribed diet plus the surgery made the gout flare up, and the new doctor actually knew that! I coulda hugged the man... I can return to work on Tuesday the 12th now... I am in my new house... just me and my doggie... and have been fixing up the place as best I can... I went to my first meeting of the GA WLS group.. it was fun and nice to see the faces that go with the posts... I had one potato skin and one wing, and felt this bad pressure under my breastbone.. I walked around the restaurant once.. but this is the first time walking didn't work.. I headed for the men's room to (as we said in the Coast Guard) talk to the seals. I felt immediately better after that... no clue what "got me" .... but that was a definite "dump" .... |

My first week back at work... they changed a lot of things since I
was gone... and it took a couple of classes, one formal and one from my
supervisor to get me going again. I did well on Saturday (sold 8!) and
felt pretty confident selling again. I was very pleasantly surprised
with the warmth of my reception back at work... everyone made a point of
coming by and seeing me and welcoming me back.. sure meant a lot to me. I lost 5 pounds this week... The gout seems a lot better, although the shoe still hurts quite a bit... but tolerable enough to wear it for the 8 hours at work. I have a follow up appointment with the new doctor on Monday.... The new house is coming along... in the last 3 weeks I have spent over $2400.00 at Walmart alone! ... I should have bought stock! |
|
| Unemployed... EEK!! |
08-07-2005 345 |
Things have certainly changed around drastically for me in the past few weeks... I quit Geico, moved to Columbus GA, new house, new town, and met a girl. The weight is not coming off... as a matter of fact, it went up a few pounds... I seem to be able to eat an awful lot, and I am eating too many carbs... I need to get back to basics and start exercising again... as long as the exercise is not packing and moving!! |
| I start my new job on Monday the 28th with Great News Magazine Distributor. | 08-25-2005 323 |
August 25th, 2005 - Weight 323 - total weight loss 86 pounds... 22 pounds in the last 18 days! ... guess the plateau went away... thank goodness! I really didn't do anything special to get over it, other than start exercising a little more often now that I am not a basket case from moving twice in 2 months! I walked a mile yesterday a a park.. up and down some tough hills... now my feet are sore, my knee was talking to me and using some nasty language, but I feel good because I really worked out! |
| 09-23-2005 317 |
Spent 9 days in Florida on my newly assigned route with the company trainer Lonnie.... I will be on my own this coming Monday... really looking forward to it... I have been shopping and am going to stock up the truck with good food... so hopefully this will make a difference... I had nearly all carbs on this last trip... not a good idea. We will see!

10-20-2005 303 |
Got home from my second solo trip to Florida... really a physical
and mental workout... but it went a lot better.... I have lost 106 pounds now! I am still working on figuring out how to eat correctly on the road... it aint easy. I have changed the way I am going to do my job, and will not be going out for 9 or 10 days at a time... it's just way too hard on me... I am going to go down to Florida for a week, and come home, then go down again and do the second part of the route, then home again. I hope this works better, because the 9 days at a time, 14-16 hours a day would have burnt me out really fast.. Here's the latest pics.... see any difference? :) |
|
11-04-2005 |
I can finally say when asked my weight "I am TWO Hundred and (whatever)".... I am also working on cutting the carbs back out of my diet... I just got back from running a route in South Carolina, and snacked on beef jerky and cashews... seemed to work well, except for the jerky stuck in my teeth, and kept me from getting hungry at all...
| 11-20-05 293 |
Weight is the same... and that's about the only
thing that's the same.... I finally had enough working for idiots, and
quit my job... I will find a job where I am treated with some respect or
die trying I guess... the last one was a nightmare! Also, after lots and
lots of administrative KaKa, my final divorce decree arrived. I am
"officially" single although I have been truly on my own for awhile
now... nice to have that hurdle behind me. I have an interview with
Dixie Homecrafters tomorrow, and a test with the Post Office on Tuesday
the 22nd.... Onward!! |
|
![]() Off to job interviews... |
11-25-05 297 |
My weight has gone up a little... and I am not eating according to the plan at all... I am having all kinds of issues with a constant gurgling and rumbling in my "stomach", nearly constant gas, and having to go to the bathroom several times a day. I have been researching this as best I can, and my guess is that it is not the food, but the quantities... I need to cut back on the amount that I eat first and see if that helps. The Post Office test was very weird... I have no idea how I actually did, but probably did OK on everything but the memory part... I interviewed with Dixie Homecrafters, and they want to hire me, and I have an interview with Labor Finders for a managers position on Sunday and another with U Haul for a managers position on Monday. |
|
02-04-06 |
As you can see from the picture, I am employed by U Haul... or Y'all
Haul, since we are in the South :) I was hired, trained in several U
Haul centers until the Area Field Manager in the Savannah area put in
his notice. I am now the new Area Field Manager for the 8 counties
surrounding the Savannah Georgia area...
I have trained with the senior AFM in my area, and today I was officially on my own. I loved it! My weight is still dropping, in fits and starts... total loss is now at 126 pounds :) |
|
|
04-07-06 |
Just updating.... I have lost 142 pounds now. Still having trouble with a lot of the aspects of this change... I can't seem to get going with any kind of exercise regime, although my job is fairly strenuous. I am not taking my vitamins, or calcium, or B-12... geez, what a dork eh... maybe by writing this I will get out of these doldrums and come up with a way to be consistent taking the vitamins and minerals I need. .... or maybe not :)

Lifes changes.... I got married on June 24th, 2006 to Lisa Dawn Willmschen in Columbus, Georgia at Rosehills Church of Christ. The entire family then drove down caravan style to Orlando Florida and a week at DisneyWorld. It rained a few times when we were there... but, as you can see from the picture on the left, we just put on the ponchos and kept on trucking! The constant walking was apparently offset by the horrible eating ... hot dogs, pizza, and carbs, carbs, carbs... I am also going to move to Monroe, Georgia and take on a new route for U Haul. Lisa and I are looking forward to the change, as we were not real happy with the Savannah area... high prices for not-so-nice housing here...
|
08-08-06 |
Weight is the same, everything else is different :) Moved to Monroe Georgia on July 17th, and started the new route with U Haul. "Started" may be too strong a word, as I don't have a service rig yet, and am basically just helping out where I can. I have been stuck at the same weight for 4 months now... I am hoping that spark will show up again so I can get back on the weight loss train, although I do feel good. |
|

08-31-06 |
I have gained back about 6 pounds... so it is really time to kick my butt and get back in gear. I started back at the YMCA yesterday with a good workout - 30 minutes on the treadmill with a little jogging, and 10 laps in the pool along with some water walking... working on the diet again - going to return to basics, i.e. eating protein first, veggies second, carbs last or not at all. I am starting a water aerobics class tonight... hope it's fun! I finally got my glasses today... and it is weird walking around wearing bi-focals... but I can see well again so I will happily get used to them.
|

Long time no update... almost too much to tell! ... OK, here we go... U Haul job was good, U Haul boss was by far the most ignorant, evil, and sadistic person I have ever had the displeasure to encounter, and I am glad I am away from him now. Quit my job and moved back to Columbus. Looking for work while still with U Haul, and have a great job with a great company now. My wonderful daughter Mindy gave birth to Monica Elizabeth Garcia on 2-2-07, so I am officially a grandfather. Happy to get back to work, trying to learn the new job, and settle down and reduce the stress that makes me eat and eat... Onward... once again.
|
06-08-2007 |
My 2 year anniversary... 2 years ago I had the surgery, and for the last year or so I have not lost any more weight... haven't really tried at all though, so I guess I should be happy that I haven't gained any weight. I still plan to try and get the weight loss going again, but I am able to work without getting tired, and my new job is a fairly physical one. I am living in Columbus, in a MUCH better house in a great part of town, job is going well, my marriage is wonderful, and I have much to thank God for.... many, many blessings indeed...

Well shoot.... reading the above entry about 9 months has gone by... and as usual with my life all has gone topsy-turvy... I have gained 30 pounds.... not a good thing at all. I quit Frito-Lay, for many reasons, and went back to work for Sea School as an instructor in Florida - from Orange Beach Alabama all the way over to Tallahassee. I am glad to be back teaching and being in the nautical world, but the job at Frito-Lay was quite physical and helped keep my weight down without me dieting at all... now that I teach, the lack of physical work is showing itself quickly. I am looking at the options for me... one thing I have never actually done through all of this is to change my lifestyle... hence the lack of success. We'll see.... reading up on diet options now, checking out how to "reset" my pouch with the 5 day pouch test. *sigh* ... onward! |
|

Good grief... the twists and turns of my life amaze me... really, I need to get settled somewhere as it is starting to get to me. Here's the saga ... posted here - I am now working for Spirit Services as a Route man...
|
|
09-17-2008 291 |
Well... once again... My knee was getting so bad I quit
Spirit services and took a job with Wade Linen as an outside Sales rep.
Welllll my knee still kept getting worse and finally ground to a halt. I
went to the doctor and he said (basically) that my knee was toast, and
had to be replaced... no other options. I was scheduled for late October
but had my name on a cancellation list and got an immediate opening for
Monday September 8th. I had the complete knee replacement surgery at
1:00pm, after getting there at 6:30 am. I was released to go home on
Thursday the 11th. I am now going through physical therapy and a lot of
pain... had no idea it was going to hurt this much! |
|
01-04-2009 317 |
Lots of changes.... as is usual with my life. OK... first off, the weight. I was off work for 3 months... first time I have been unemployed since I started working at age 13... didn't like it at all. The weight is up to 315, and I sure need to start working on it... I start Monday the 5th of January.. I am planning on going to the YMCA 3 times a week and eat according to my surgery requirements. Second... the knee. It is feeling pretty good, although really "clunky" and mechanical feeling, and hurts at night. Third - New job. Exactly 3 months from my knee replacement surgery I started working for ITT out at Fort Benning as a Warehouse Specialist. I work in the Weapons Pool issuing weapons and associated equipment to the troops, inventory, etc. So far it is working out great, and it seems to be just physical enough to give the knee a good workout during the day but not enough to kill me. It is good money, and has fairly regular hours.... literally the job I have been praying for. |

Sort of started Weight watchers a couple of weeks ago... still trying to adapt all the changes into my life. The one thing I really needed to do through all of this is the one thing I didn't do... that is, change the way I eat and the things I eat... All of the things I thought it impossible to do without are actually pretty easy to do without... like chocolate and junk like that... don't even miss it at all. I am still not doing anything about drinking water.. just hate the stuff.. so this will be a tough one. The other problem is exercise.. having problems with my feet and also I hurt my back at work.. I am going to try and figure out a schedule for me at the YMCA pool, and do the recumbent bike. |

Just wanted to post my first week at Weight Watchers... Lost 8.2 pounds! .... sure was nice to see an actual weight loss instead of the constant weight gain for the past few years.
|
01-30-2010 303.0 |
Still losing... nice and steady now... just like they (Weight Watchers) said it would work. A lot of the program is becoming second nature already... like being conscious of everything I eat. I had a nice little moment at work... did not bring enough food to work, because I forgot I was the closer that day... went to the snack machine, examined the contents, went to the computer and looked up the possibilities... and went back to the machine and chose the Sun Chips Spicy Chipotle for 4 points. Good choice :)

Weight stayed the same last week, but lost 2.4 this week.... so doing well. I started my new job as the T and P guy on 02-08-10. Less physical, more responsibility. Still learning the WW system of doing things, but it is a real easy group of changes to make... maybe because I have made up my mind to do it. |
|

Skipped a week putting the weight here... seemed silly since it was only .4 pounds... Lost over 8.2 pounds this week... mostly because I have been sick with some sort of intestinal bug that makes me live in the bathroom all day. Missed work today, hopefully this will let up so I don't spend all day in the head at work. WW meetings are really useful and fun. I learn a lot from both the Leader and the others who attend, many who are Lifetime Members.

Going pretty well actually. Lisa and I joined the program called "Couch to 5K" a couple weeks ago... We start the 3rd week tomorrow (05-04-10). You walk for 5 minutes, run for 90 seconds, walk for 90 seconds, etc. It gets a little harder each week and the idea is to have you run a 5K at the end of the program. The hours at work changed today to summer hours... 6am to 2:30pm, so I started playing racketball at the Army Gym on base. Lost a couple more pounds at today's weigh in. I am having a "procedure" on Thursday May 6th - my back injury from work... gotta love how long workers comp takes to actually treat you... anyway, having a facet block and really hoping and praying it stops this pain I have been living with since September...
|
05-06-10 288 |
Update.... went to the doctor today... the joint is so deteriorated he
could not get the needle inserted into the facet joint! The Doctor
scheduled me for a return to do a different procedure - a Radio
Frequency Ablation where a needle is inserted and a small electrical
current is sent to make sure the doctor has the right nerve and then the
nerve is heated for a minute to kill it. I hope that eventually I will get my back pain free... |
|
|
|
05-15-10 286 |
I had another appointment with the doctor... all is ready for my procedure on Wednesday.... hope all goes well. We are having lots of fun with Atmos Energy. Too long of a story, but basically their tech lied and said he came here to turn on the gas... no he didn't. But we have to wait until Monday now.. so 4 days with no hot water. I rigged up a bucket and pump so we could have hot showers... worked great! See the pic to the left :) |

05-17-2010 279.6 |
Dropped over 6 pounds in a week... partly dehydration since I had just done a couple of miles walking fast in the park. This kind of weight loss usually comes back later, but I am ready for it and wont be bothered by the rebound affect this time.
|
06-25-2010 278.8 |
Haven't lost much weight... it is going up a little and down a little, but I am staying on plan and playing racquetball. I was walking 3 1/2 miles 3 times a week but it is just too hot now. Lousy excuse, but the truth. I am going to start back with the walking since it is hard to find a racquetball partner.
|
08-15-2010 278.0 |
It has been a roller coaster couple of months. Came close to quitting, but hung in there with the help of my Weight Watchers Leader Wendi, Lisa, and a lot of people on the Weight Watchers forum "Guys On A Diet" or "Goad" I am going to do my best to recommit to this. I am going back to tracking my food and counting my points and basically just following the program as best I can. I got down to 275 for a week but had just played a marathon racquetball outing of a couple hours and I am sure I was dehydrated. I don't want to just keep track of successes, but track the bad times too... then try and learn from them.

Just an update... had my ups and downs but the biggest difference I see
immediately is that I don't quit on Weight Watchers... I kinda went off
plan and quit tracking for a few weeks, and my weight did go up to 282
for a short period, but that is very minor compared to the previous 5
years of losing and then blowing up completely. I never stopped eating
the good healthy foods I eat now.. just didn't track. I am still working
out and playing racquetball. Today I play a little racquetball then did
30 minutes on the treadmill at 3.4 mph in the following sequence: 5 minutes warm up, then run at 4.4 for a minute, then 2 minutes walking... repeat up to 20 minutes, then the last 10 minutes walking. Compare that to 5 years ago when I could only do 8 minutes on the treadmill going slow... I am staring intently at the lowest weight I got down to with the surgery... 264... I have it in my sights... gotta buckle down now and get to it... |
